Welcome to the site of New Zealand By-Products Ltd (NZBP).
Since the company commenced business in 1982, the business has grown to a size where we are the major processor of natural casings in New Zealand.
NZBP holds a NZFSA export accreditation and a New Zealand Meat Boad export registration.
Our office and main processing facility is located in Whakatu, Hawkes Bay.
NZBP production facilities source raw material (known as “green runners”) from up to 15 abattoirs from throughout New Zealand. Following retrieval at the abattoirs, the green runners are tied together into knots and placed into casks of chilled water. The strict maintenance of the “cold chain” from the abattoir to NZBP’s operation is achieved by use of insulated transport vehicles. NZBP’s abattoir supervisors work closely with staff at the abattoirs to manage the raw material quality from retrieval to arrival into the cold store at our facilities. After arrival the green runners go through a cleaning process.
Product for the New Zealand market is further processed - ie. selected and tubed as per customer requirements. A range of sheep/pig and beef casings are packed for customer requirements and distributed throughout the Australasian market.
The Whakatu operation has the capacity to process approximately 2.0 million green runners per annum. The plant operates one shift each day.
